On December 7, 2016, the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce honored Mindy Corporon, Boyer & Corporon Wealth Management’s Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, with its 2016 OP Award on behalf of the Faith Always Wins Foundation and the SevenDays™ Make a Ripple, Change the World team. The Chamber created the OP Awards over twenty years ago to recognize Ordinary People who do extraordinary things for the Chamber and for our community. The foundation and annual event not only has affected Overland Park, KS, but also other cities and their residents across the country.
A hate crime took the lives of Mindy’s father, William L. Corporon, MD, her son, Reat Underwood and Terri LaManno on April 13, 2014 in the parking lot of the Jewish Community Campus and Village Shalom. In the months that followed, Mindy responded to this act of violence by creating a foundation and its SevenDays™ Make a Ripple, Change the World event, which spreads kindness and understanding throughout the Midwest region and beyond.
During an interview with Flatland, KCPT’s digital magazine, she explained wanting to “give people a safe environment where they can learn about one another’s faiths and respect one another.” She said, “It’s a step further than tolerance, because tolerance is just tolerating people, not understanding.” It was her way to give back to her community that quickly and whole-heartedly supported her and her family in the minutes, hours, days, weeks and months after the deaths of her father and son.
First, Mindy established the Faith Always Wins Foundation, under which she created SevenDays™ Make a Ripple, Change the World—seven days to commemorate the memories of Bill, Reat and Mrs. LaManno and to strengthen the sense of community, building upon understanding our commonalities among religions, races and cultures in our metropolitan area. Each of the seven days has a theme such as love, discover or connect, and focuses on acts of kindness and interfaith dialogue. The week-long event culminates with a Peace Walk.
The Foundation raises funds to support medical initiatives, grief support, organ donation and the performing arts, which was a particular love of Bill and Reat. For more information, please visit Give SevenDays™, or you can follow on Facebook.
